THE CHUCKLE woke me, and when my eyes fluttered open, a very beautiful woman in a United flight attendant uniform was standing beside Kade’s chair, smiling at me.
I understood the reason for her mirth. On my right Declan had lifted the armrest between us and slouched sideways against my chest. Kade was dead to the world, using my left shoulder as a pillow.
“Hi,” she greeted me.
“You look like that actress, what’s-her-name,” I mumbled, not awake yet, and the filter on my brain wasn’t up and running.
“I don’t know,” she said slowly, narrowing her eyes.
“Oh, Priyanka Chopra,” I announced, glad it had come to me. Normally I remembered people’s names at 3:00 a.m. when the time was long past.
“Well, thank you, that’s a lovely compliment,” she mused, using her finger to indicate first Declan, “I’m guessing brother,” and then Kade, “and what, boyfriend? Husband?”
I shivered without meaning to. “No, just a friend.”
Her face tilted sideways, seemingly unsure about what I’d said. “Really?”
It was a lot of closeness for just friends, I knew that. Kade had a way of filling up the space around me. “I’m guessing we’re in LA?”
She nodded. “It’s time for all the handsome men to get off the plane.”
It was nice of her to include me. With my brown hair and brown eyes, I was not the traffic-stopping beauty either of my companions was.
Once she turned away, I gently nudged Kade, and he sat up slowly, one eye open, looking around blearily.
“Hey, do we have a connection?” I asked. “Or were you screwing with me about us going to Santa Barbara?”
“No, we’re going there.” He yawned so wide his jaw cracked. “Let’s go.”
I gently shook Declan awake, and when he opened his eyes, it was sort of heartbreaking. He looked even younger than usual. I had a moment to ponder what his life should have been. He’d grown up much too fast.
“Come on, buddy, let’s go.”
His smile was luminous, and as I helped them off the plane and we headed to baggage claim, I had a moment to wonder when it was that he’d gone from CI to guy we were protecting to a person I could see in my life. We could be friends, I could already tell, and maybe even more. Perhaps he could be the little brother I was missing. It was a nice thought.
